...as the rest of Iceland. Well, at least that's what the guidebook said, which I find hard to believe given the amazing scenery we saw today.
I woke up fresh after 12 hours of sleep, my eye ask really helped. When I woke up at 1030pm to use the bathroom the sun was still going full force. It's weird.
But I digress.
We headed out early this morning to drive the Golden Circle, a collection of attractions that are within spit shot of the capital. Where as yesterday we were blessed with beautiful weather, today was cold and rainy. Thank goodness for thermals.
The first stop was thingvillir, the place where Europe's and Americas tectonic plates meet. It was horribly beautiful with divots and crevices. We happened to be about an hour ahead of the hoards of tour buses, luck that would continue throughout the day.
After that, we headed to Geysir--the OG of geysirs. The one all other geysirs were named after. While that one is bigger than Old Faithful, it doesn't erupt much anymore after some tourists in the 50s through rocks in and plugged it up. I bet they were American. nonetheless, it's little sister erupts every few minutes so we saw that in action.
The last stop of the official golden circle is Gullfoss waterfall. It's europes largest waterfall and rivals Niagra Falls. The sheer power is amazing and pictures just can't do it justice.
After this trek, anyone would be hungry. Luckily, I heard about a fabulous lunch spot with a tomato exclusive menu. Fridhiemar is an organic tomato greenhouse. The restaurant serves a menu that includes bloody Mary's, tomato cheesecake, and of course, tomato soup. The tomato soup was splendid, and the fresh bread--even better. I'm so happy we went.
We ended our day touring Kerid, an large crater. Which is about all I have to say about that. Tonight we're going to hopefully try out a geothermal pool if the weather holds.
Impressions:
Many of the tourists are English or French speaking
There's a 15 lbs cat at our air bnb -- her name is snoopa
I haven't watched TV in 3 days! Go me!!
